There is no Black middle class in the United States. There are Black individuals who make enough money and possess enough material belongings to be middle class consumers, but to be middle class requires much more than labor and consumption. To be middle class requires having the understanding that your potential within the social, political and economic order is without extraordinary restraints. To be middle class is to own key tangibles and manipulate critical intangibles. To be middle class is to be audacious, to initiate new standards, to function on your terms and seek to make those terms the norm. To be middle class is to be daring and to promote that which creates a buffer zone between your aspirations and threats to your aspirations. To be middle class is to seek control. Definitely, there is nothing close to a Black middle class in the United States of America.
